About Us
Melvin Nelson Sr. and his wife Fluvia established Nelson's on Washington Avenue in West Racine in 1940. Their philosophy was to serve the customer and provide the merchandise they requested.
Melvin Jr. and his wife Joan joined the business in 1948 and became full owners in 1966 upon the retirement of Mel Sr. Their son, Jeff, joined the business as Store manager at the Washington Ave. store in 1978. It was in that same year that a second location was established at 4636 Douglas Ave. on the north side of Racine.
Following in the Nelson family tradition, Jeff and his wife, Katie, took over the reins of the family business in early 1999 upon the retirement of Mel and Joan. Jeff and Katie are maintaining the same high level of quality and outstanding customer service while keeping pace with current retail trends.
Nelson's Variety has always prided itself on carrying what customers look for the most. Jeff and Katie are constantly being reminded of how necessary the variety store is to their customers. Customers have said that after driving all over looking for that certain one of a kind item, specialty, novelty or even everyday household staple, they find it at Nelson's Variety.
For over 65 years, Nelson's Variety Stores have provided quality merchandise at competitive prices. "Variety" is our middle name and we stock everything from aspirin to zippers.
